The Festival de Cannes will take place from May 16-27, 2023. The competition for student films, La Cinef, will screen PRIMITIVE TIMES (UHRMENSCHEN) by Hao Yu, made at the Film University Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF. Two German short film productions were invited to the Quinzaine des Cinéastes this year: THE BIRTHDAY PARTY (IL COMPLEANNO DI ENRICO) by Francesco Sossai (German Film and Television Academy Berlin) and THE RED SEA MAKES ME WANNA CRY by Faris Alrjoob (Academy of Media Arts Cologne).

At the festival's film market, the Marché du Film, 33 cutting-edge short films will be presented. They can be viewed by industry representatives via AG Kurzfilm's online catalog. Nine films from this selection will also be available for online viewing at the Short Film Corner (May 21-24, 2023), the industry platform for short film at Cannes. There, they will remain accessible for one year for accredited users. These films have already been highly successful at festivals such as the Berlinale, Rotterdam or Sundance. In addition, registered users can also view some of the films via the T-Port platform.

The Next Generation Short Tiger program, a cooperation project between German Films and the German Federal Film Board (FFA), in which AG Kurzfilm is a partner, can also be viewed online in the Short Film Corner. The program will celebrate its international market premiere on May 23, 2023 at 6:45 p.m. at the Olympia 2 cinema in Cannes in the presence of the film teams. On site, AG Kurzfilm, together with German Films, will offer these young professionals various opportunities such as a market tour, pitch training, networking opportunities and a workshop with experts to deepen their expertise around marketing strategies for their films.

"In recent years, German short films have been shining at the Cannes Film Festival with reliable regularity. The fact that this year a total of three short films are being screened in the official sections Quinzaine des Cinéastes and La Cinef is further confirmation that German filmmakers can compete on an international level," says Jana Cernik, managing director of AG Kurzfilm.
