In the deep rainforests on the remote island of West Papua, men seek their fortune in the ancient trees whose valuable wood they procure for the international market. Caught between the natural wealth of their native land and the inexhaustible demands of capitalist commodity production, the loggers face an impossible choice: Either they remain destitute and preserve the forest or they destroy it for a little money and their children's education.
Max Sänger is a filmmaker and cinematographer based in Hamburg. In 2021 he completed his Master's Degree at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts, where he studied documentary film under Pepe Danquart. KAYU BESI is his graduation film.

Andrianus "Oetjoe" Merdhi is a filmmaker from Jakarta, Indonesia. He trained as an engineer in Berlin and worked as a school teacher in the highlands of West Papua. He currently teaches as a film lecturer at the Binus University in Jakarta.
