THOSE WHO LEFT, THOSE WHO STAYED is an auteur-driven self-portrait documentary exploring the emotional aftermath of migration from Iran. Framed by New Year moments in Berlin and Tehran, and using archived voice messages sent to the filmmaker after the protest movement 'Woman, Life, Freedom,' along with new footage and mirrored imagery, it reflects on absence, longing, and the quiet emotional distance between those who left and those who stayed, where home becomes everywhere and nowhere at once.
Arezu Khanicheh is an Iranian filmmaker based in Berlin. Her work explores themes of migration, memory, and identity through poetic realism and emotional restraint. She also worked as a lead screenwriter for acclaimed Iranian animated series.
