Treating language as a device of meaning, the film explores the transposable power that comes with language itself – the quality that arises from the device, rather than from the meaning. Given the opportunity to work on attractive and expensive 16mm film material, yet in a restrictive political climate, the filmmaker wonders about all the transactions she made when emigrating to Germany – what does one have to give up so as to be able to live in the "promised land"?

Mina Simendić is a Serbian filmmaker, editor, and media artist who works primarily in the field of experimental and expanded film. Currently pursuing a BA Film at the HfbK University Hamburg, she lives and works in Hamburg. Her latest film THIS DESIRABLE DEVICE premiered at the Berlinale.
