Young Edgar has just killed his old landlord and hides the corpse under the kitchen floorboards. Nobody will discover it, but when two police officers arrive, Edgar seems to hear the old mans heart beating under the planks. This drives him out of control until he admits his secret. But even later in a psychiatric unit, Edgars misery does not end.
