At the Intersection of Film and Art
On January 17, 2025 at 6:00 PM, the seventh edition of “Emerging Artists – Contemporary Experimental Films and Video Art from Germany” will celebrate its world premiere as part of the 38th Stuttgart Filmwinter. Six current works by artists who approach their themes in experimental, performative, and essayistic ways were selected by a jury. At the screening at Kino Delphi in Stuttgart, several of the filmmakers as well as the jury members Mara Marxsen (Kurzfilm Agentur Hamburg), Alfred Rotert (former director of the European Media Art Festival, EMAF), Giovanna Thiery (Festival Director Stuttgart Filmwinter), and Anne Turek (AG Kurzfilm office) will be present.
New technologies, the climate crisis, and gender identity are central themes of the 7th edition of the Emerging Artists program. The filmmakers have roots in Germany, the Czech Republic, Taiwan, and Togo, and each brings their own cultural, social, and political influences into their work. This diversity of perspectives enriches the program with innovative and varied narrative styles.
“Their works resist clear conceptual categorization: they parasitically utilize new technological developments and voices from social media to rework or recontextualize them; they explore the artificiality of digital, floral, and animal bodies; they describe the spiritual processing of an ecological disaster and question conventional gender attributions. What unites these artists is their willingness to explore border areas – in doing so, they seek a new form, an independent visual language, or alternative narrative structures,” writes filmmaker Florian Fischer in his foreword to “Emerging Artists Vol. 7”.
