German short film shines in Cannes
Five German short films in La Cinef, Quinzaine des Cinéastes, and Semaine de la Critique +++ The latest short films from the AG Kurzfilm online catalog in the Short Film Corner
As part of the Cannes International Film Festival (May 12–23, 2026), five German short films will be featured in prestigious sections. They will screen in La Cinef, the Quinzaine des Cinéastes, and the Semaine de la Critique. GROWING STONES, FLYING PAPERS by Soraya Shamsi and Roozbeh Gezerseh (Filmuniversität Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF) has been invited to the La Cinef section, which showcases outstanding short films from film schools around the world. In the independent Quinzaine des Cinéastes section, the animated film DAUGHTERS OF THE LATE COLONEL by Elizabeth Hobbs (Animate Projects, Fabian&Fred) celebrates its world premiere. In addition, three German entries are represented in the short film competition of the prestigious Semaine de la Critique section for emerging talent: CITY OF OWLS by Zhenia Kazankina (Eversince), NAFRON by Daood Alabdulaa and „VATERLAND“ ODER EIN BULE NAMENS YANTO by Berthold Wahjudi (madfilms, aftersun creative, allergikerfilm, HFF München, BR - Bayerischer Rundfunk).
German short films at the film market and in the Short Film Corner
As part of the Marché du Film, AG Kurzfilm is also presenting 30 recent German short films, which industry professionals can view via AG Kurzfilm’s online catalog. Twelve of these films, which have already enjoyed success at international festivals such as the Berlinale, Oberhausen, Winterthur, and Rotterdam, are also featured as a curated selection titled “Festival Highlight 2026” in the Short Film Corner (May 17–20, 2026). As the official short film platform of the film market, it offers accredited users one year of online viewing access. Some of the films are also available via the industry platform T-Port.
Next Generation Short Tiger and Industry Promotion
The current Next Generation Short Tiger — a collaboration between German Films and the German Federal Film Board (FFA) in partnership with AG Kurzfilm—is also available online in the Short Film Corner. The program will celebrate its international market premiere on May 19, 2026, at 6:15 p.m. at the Olympia 2 cinema in Cannes, accompanied by the participating film teams. On site, AG Kurzfilm, together with German Films, supports emerging talent in the industry with a comprehensive range of training opportunities focused on marketing and international networking. The program is complemented by a guided market tour, pitch training, and a workshop with industry experts.
